Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Myalgic

Encephalomyelitis

The CDC defines CFS/ME as the following:

Myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS) is a serious, long-term illness that affects many body systems. People with ME/CFS are often not able to do their usual activities. At times, ME/CFS may confine them to bed. People with ME/CFS have severe fatigue and sleep problems. ME/ CFS may get worse after people with the illness try to do as much as they want or need to do. This symptom is known as postexertional malaise (PEM). Other symptoms can include problems with thinking and concentrating, pain, and dizziness.

Some of the Most Common Symptoms:

  • Profound fatigue not relived by rest
  • Post-exertional malaise that can last 24 hours or more after mild to moderate activity which can be mental or physical activity
  • Sleep disorders including un-refreshing sleep
  • Joint and muscle pain, widespread, sometimes migratory or localized
  • Muscle weakness
  • Headaches of a new type or increased severity
  • Difficulties with concentration, short term memory and word recall
  • Confusion, slowness of thought and information processing
  • Hypersensitivity to light, noise and emotional overload
  • Intolerance to heat or cold
  • Low body temperature, cold extremities, sweating
  • How is it diagnosed?

Without a definitive test or biomarker to confirm the presence or absence of a substance or disease we have to establish an evaluation of the individual and personalize their story. This begins with a personal history, medical history, physical exam, blood work (individualized for each patient) and other diagnostic work to best determine the origin of your condition. A diagnosis of ME/CFS is done by a series of questions and evaluating the answers.

    How is it treated?

Treatment usually targets the cause of the condition as well as support the immune system and energy levels of the patient.

Some treatment plans may include some or all of the following:

    • Physical Activity – begin light activity as tolerated
    • Massage Therapy and Acupuncture
    • Prescription Medications – targeted ateither the cause (infection or hormones or other), or medications to keep you alert and awake
    • Vitamins, Minerals and Supplements
